When you think of your wedding day, you probably imagine genuine, heartfelt moments—like laughing with friends, hugging your parents, or sharing a quiet glance with your partner. That’s the magic of candid wedding photos: they capture the real emotions and stories of your day. But here’s the truth many couples don’t know—most natural-looking wedding photos aren’t completely unscripted.

Why Candid Wedding Photos Matter
Candid wedding photos preserve the moments you’ll treasure forever: the tears, the laughter, and everything in between. They show your day as it felt—not just how it looked. These photos become the memories you’ll share with future generations. They preserve the love, joy, and personality of your celebration.

Adjusting My Approach So Every Moment Feels Candid
There are a few different kinds of moments you’ll encounter on a wedding day. First there are the actual spontaneous moments. These are the totally natural, unscripted things—parents tearing up during the ceremony, friends laughing during toasts, or sweet reactions during the first dance. Capturing this is all about paying attention to what’s happening around you, not just the main event. As a photographer I need to read the room and adjust to what is happening. For example, during the cake cutting I don’t just focus on the couple. Obviously I get that safe shot, but I’m also looking around. Are mom and dad watching on and holding hands? Is a kid eyeing the cake? Is grandpa asleep at his table? These little details tell the full story.
Then there are the semi-posed moments. These are things like the bride getting ready with her mom, the first look, or the groom having a drink with his guys. They involve making sure everything is lit beautifully, hair is nice, ties are straight, etc.. After I give the ‘ok’ you can just relinquish control and let whatever unfolds happen as naturally as possible. Its the middle area where you and your family/friends want to look your best and not be self conscious, but also want to experience those moments genuinely. If we just let these moments happen on a whim you risk bad lighting on your face, trash in the background, important people missing, etc.
Last there are the “posed candid” portraits- usually of the couple. These are the shots that look spontaneous but actually needed a bit of direction. Couples don’t just wander into a field and hold hands on their own, right? So I give you something to do—walk together, cuddle, tell each other a joke, sit on the bench and have a chat. I then capture how you do those things naturally. Its not truly candid or spontaneous but incorporating movement relaxes you, gets your mind off of photos a bit, and gives you freedom to laugh and show your personality. That then creates more natural looking moments- which often seem spontaneous.
Each of these moments requires a different approach and level of direction. Together they create a complete, authentic “candid” story of the day—full of both big emotions and little in-between moments.

Why the Right Photographer Makes All the Difference
Hiring a photographer experienced in capturing candid wedding photos is key. You want someone who understands how to read the room—spotting quiet moments you didn’t even notice—and who knows how to set up situations that allow genuine emotions to shine through.
The right photographer will:
✅ Make you and your loved ones feel at ease
✅ Know when to fade into the background
✅ Step in when needed to guide you into natural, flattering moments
✅ Anticipate moments of joy, connection, and surprise
This combination ensures your wedding photos are full of life, love, and real emotion—so you can look back and remember exactly how you felt, not just how you posed.
